Chelsea vs Manchester United
Chelsea’s little revival hit a brick wall against Spurs. They controlled plenty of the ball but created very little, and the home loss killed some of the momentum from back-to-back league wins.
United arrive in much worse shape after Bournemouth walked into Old Trafford and pumped them 3-0. One league win from seven is grim reading, and Stamford Bridge is hardly the place you’d choose to go looking for a reset.
Chelsea haven’t exactly been bulletproof themselves, but they’re playing the better football and should have enough at home.
Bournemouth vs Leeds United
Bournemouth have suddenly woken up. Back-to-back league wins have completely changed the mood, and dismantling United at Old Trafford was comfortably their best result of the season.
Leeds remain incredibly difficult to shift, but they’ve started collecting stalemates instead of wins. Another naught-all against Sunderland kept the unbeaten run moving, although the attack has cooled off.
Bournemouth are at home and carrying much more momentum. I’ll take them to keep the little revival rolling.
Brentford vs Nottingham Forest
Brentford weren’t at their best against Hull but still came away with something. That’s been a recurring theme with them this season. Even when they’re ordinary, they’re annoyingly difficult to put away.
Forest at least stopped the rot with a draw at Ipswich after a rough run of defeats. The problem is they’re still struggling badly for goals, and heading to Brentford isn’t an especially friendly assignment.
Brentford should have too much at home.
Coventry City vs Sunderland
This feels like a game both sides will have circled.
Coventry’s sudden burst of form has disappeared just as quickly, with consecutive losses since they dog walked Newcastle. Fulham shut them out last weekend and the attack has gone quiet again.
Sunderland finally stopped losing, but a goalless handshake with Leeds doesn’t exactly scream resurrection. Coventry being at home is enough to tip me their way, but neither side is exactly screaming confidence.
Hull City vs Ipswich Town
Two promoted sides who have both been far more competitive than expected.
Hull’s early charge has cooled, but another point against Brentford showed they’re still difficult to beat at home. Ipswich also shared the points with Forest and continue to sit comfortably enough after a pretty respectable start.
There really isn’t much between them. This has stalemate written all over it.
Manchester City vs Brighton
So City are human after all.
Villa ended City’s perfect league start last weekend, and for once the usual wave of pressure didn’t eventually bail them out. Brighton’s ridiculous scoring run also hit the brakes at Anfield, where Liverpool shut them out.
Two wounded sides, but the Etihad immediately after City’s first league loss feels like horrible timing for Brighton. City should respond.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Crystal Palace
Spurs might actually be alive.
After taking forever to get their first league win, they’ve now backed it up by going to Stamford Bridge and beating Chelsea. Two on the bounce has suddenly made the opening month look considerably less catastrophic.
Palace, meanwhile, have been absolutely smoked over the last fortnight and the attack has gone missing with it. For once, Tottenham are the easy pick.
Aston Villa vs Fulham
Villa have completely flipped their season. Back-to-back league wins over Newcastle and Manchester City have turned a miserable opening month into something that suddenly looks pretty healthy.
Fulham deserve some respect too. After waiting forever for their first win, they’ve now strung together consecutive victories and finally have a bit of momentum themselves.
Villa Park and current form give Villa the edge, but this is much trickier than it would’ve looked a few weeks ago.
Liverpool vs Arsenal
Game of the round by a mile.
Liverpool finally look a lot more like themselves again. Back-to-back league wins, including a clean sheet against Brighton, have steadied things after City gave them a hiding.
Arsenal just keep rolling. Everton barely laid a glove on them, another clean sheet followed, and they’re level with City at the top. Anfield makes Liverpool incredibly difficult to oppose, but Arsenal are the more reliable side right now. I’m sitting on the fence.
Newcastle United vs Everton
Newcastle badly needed their response last weekend. After being flogged by Coventry and then losing again to Villa, getting back on the winners’ list stopped the slide before it turned properly ugly.
Everton have now been shut out in consecutive league defeats to Chelsea and Arsenal. Moyes still has them organised, but the attack is producing very little when they’re asked to chase games.
At St James’ Park, Newcastle should make it two on the bounce.
