Everton vs Coventry City
Everton finally remembered how to win away from home, pinching the points at Newcastle for the second time in a week. The Toffees weren’t exactly playing champagne football, but they made the hosts look completely toothless.
Coventry got a badly needed lift by knocking over bottom-placed Sunderland, although keeping the back door shut remains a challenge. Jack Grealish’s Everton return is still up in the air, so the home side might have to do it without him. With a little momentum back at the new ground, Everton should get the job done.
Leeds United vs Tottenham Hotspur
Leeds have become very good at making life difficult for everyone, including themselves. Their latest trip to Bournemouth ended in another defeat, and the wins have dried up rather badly.
Spurs are heading the other way after making it three league victories on the bounce, although Palace’s early red card gave them a fairly generous helping hand. Elland Road rarely offers visitors a quiet afternoon, so this won’t be a stroll. Tottenham’s extra confidence might be enough to sneak it.
Arsenal vs Hull City
Arsenal went to Anfield, grabbed a rare win and walked away three points clear at the top. The Gunners barely gave Liverpool a sniff and are starting to look annoyingly comfortable in title-race scraps.
Hull have gone an age without a win, and their latest lead against Ipswich disappeared almost as soon as they’d celebrated it. They’re stubborn enough to make things awkward, but a trip to the Emirates is a rotten place to fix your form. This has home win written all over it.
Fulham vs Newcastle United
Fulham nicked a late point at Villa after spending much of the afternoon chasing shadows. It wasn’t pretty, but they’ve at least shown a bit of fight in a season that’s been rather stop-start.
Newcastle were dreadful against Everton and got booed off after another miserable home defeat. Their attack looks short of ideas, and Jacob Ramsey’s late dismissal adds another headache. Fulham at the Cottage might just have enough to pile on the misery.
Nottingham Forest vs Manchester City
Forest are sliding towards trouble at a fairly alarming rate. Brentford dealt them another defeat, and their attack currently looks about as dangerous as a damp biscuit.
City have hit a wobble of their own, losing back-to-back league games after starting with seven straight wins. Brighton shut them out despite a mountain of City chances, so the finishing needs a serious tune-up. Forest might make it awkward at the City Ground, but surely City have too much firepower to stay down for long.
Brighton vs Brentford
Brighton have gone from exciting to downright frightening. Winning at Manchester City without conceding is a pretty tidy statement, and third place is no accident.
Brentford finally snapped their winless run by seeing off Forest, with Igor Thiago finding the net again. The Bees can make a nuisance of themselves, but Brighton have been creating chances for fun. At the Amex, the Seagulls get the nod in what could be a cracking contest.
Crystal Palace vs Liverpool
Palace got beaten by Spurs and lost Jean-Philippe Mateta to a red card before the match had properly got going. Their defence has been leaking goals, and now their main attacking outlet is suspended too.
Liverpool are still licking their wounds after Arsenal walked into Anfield and pinched the points. The Reds weren’t completely hopeless, but all that pressure produced precious little end product. Palace look there for the taking, so Liverpool should bounce back.
Ipswich Town vs Bournemouth
Ipswich showed plenty of guts at Hull, fighting back to snatch a point after briefly losing control of the match. Julio Enciso supplied the magic, but the defence is still giving opponents far too many invitations.
Bournemouth were far more convincing against Leeds and have begun to find some rhythm again. The Cherries look sharper at both ends, while Ipswich keep turning matches into frantic scrambles. I’ll take Bournemouth to edge another lively one.
Sunderland vs Chelsea
Sunderland are rooted to the bottom after another painful afternoon at Coventry. Their defence has been handing out goals like party favours, and Omar Alderete’s suspension won’t help.
Chelsea got back on track by beating United, with Cole Palmer returning to make an immediate difference. João Pedro is still missing, but the Blues have enough quality elsewhere to cause plenty of trouble. Sunderland need a miracle or a very generous Chelsea performance.
Manchester United vs Aston Villa
United’s season is turning into a weekly public inquiry. Chelsea handed them another defeat, the winless streak has reached nine matches and Lisandro Martínez is suspended for this one.
Villa weren’t brilliant against Fulham, letting a late equaliser spoil what should have been a routine win. They’re still a much more settled outfit than United, who look capable of making any opponent feel like title contenders. Old Trafford won’t enjoy this, but Villa could walk away with the lot.
