Brentford vs Chelsea

Friday, September 18 – Gtech Community Stadium

Brentford are still unbeaten, although they’ve become specialists in draws they probably feel they could have won. They were competitive again against Bournemouth and continue to look like a side that will make life difficult for just about everyone.

Chelsea are a completely different kind of headache. Going forward they look dangerous almost every time they get near the box, but defensively there is still far too much chaos. Hull went to Stamford Bridge and came away with a point, which wasn’t exactly part of the script.

Brentford will make this awkward, especially at home, but Chelsea have more ways to hurt them. I’ll lean towards the visitors in what should be a pretty entertaining game.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa

Saturday, September 19 – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Tottenham have somehow reached four Premier League games without scoring. Their latest effort ended in a naught-all stalemate with Everton, and once again there was barely anything happening in front of goal.

Villa finally found the net against Forest, so at least that particular monkey is off their back, but they still walked away empty-handed. One point from four games isn’t exactly the start Emery had in mind.

Trying to pick a winner between these two currently feels like choosing which shopping trolley has the least broken wheel. Spurs have home advantage, Villa have at least remembered how to score. A handshake at full-time wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Brighton vs Arsenal

Saturday, September 19 – Amex Stadium

This is easily one of the games of the round.

Brighton absolutely pumped Coventry 5-0 last weekend and are suddenly the highest-scoring side in the league. They’ve now shown against Chelsea and Coventry that when the attack gets rolling, things can get ugly very quickly.

Arsenal just keep doing Arsenal things. Four games, four wins, and even when they aren’t completely dominating they look calm enough to find a way through. Sunderland gave them a decent test, but the champions never looked particularly rattled.

Brighton are good enough to make this uncomfortable and I expect them to have chances. Arsenal are still the side I’d rather trust when the game reaches the final half-hour.

Everton vs Ipswich Town

Saturday, September 19 – Hill Dickinson Stadium

Everton aren’t setting the league on fire, but they’re becoming extremely difficult to knock over. Another stalemate at Spurs continued a pretty solid start, and Moyes has them looking organised again.

Ipswich deserve plenty of credit. They went to Palace and came away with all three points, taking advantage once the game opened up and showing they’re not back in the Premier League just to make up the numbers.

Everton at home should still have an edge, but Ipswich have enough about them to make this uncomfortable. This won’t be the walkover the prices might suggest.

Newcastle United vs Hull City

Saturday, September 19 – St James’ Park

Newcastle were absolutely flogged 4-1 by Leeds on Monday night. There isn’t much point dressing it up. They were second best everywhere and the match was basically gone before half-time.

Hull continue to be one of the surprises of the season. They went to Stamford Bridge, scored twice and left with another point, keeping their unbeaten start alive.

St James’ Park should produce some sort of Newcastle response, but Hull have earned enough respect that blindly tipping against them now feels silly. Newcastle have the stronger squad. Hull are playing like the stronger team.

Nottingham Forest vs Coventry City

Saturday, September 19 – City Ground

Forest finally got their first win of the season at Villa Park and have quietly improved a fair bit since that opening-round loss. They’re starting to look more comfortable defensively and far more settled in what they’re trying to do.

Coventry are having a miserable introduction to the Premier League. They still haven’t scored and Brighton absolutely tore them apart 5-0 last weekend. Confidence can’t exactly be booming.

The City Ground is hardly where you’d choose to go looking for your first goal and first point. Forest should get another good opportunity to build some momentum here.

Bournemouth vs Liverpool

Sunday, September 20 – Vitality Stadium

Bournemouth are still waiting for their first win despite looking dangerous in basically every game. They keep getting themselves into decent positions and then finding creative new ways not to finish the job.

Liverpool haven’t exactly started like a side ready to steamroll the league either. Fulham frustrated them into a naught-all draw at Anfield, leaving Liverpool with three draws from their opening four matches.

Bournemouth are absolutely capable of causing them problems, especially at home, but Liverpool have too much quality for this stop-start beginning to continue forever. Eventually one of these attacking performances has to properly click.

Leeds United vs Crystal Palace

Sunday, September 20 – Elland Road

Leeds are absolutely flying. They tore Newcastle apart 4-1 on Monday night and are still unbeaten after four games, which is a considerably better start than most people expected from a newly promoted side.

Palace have been much harder to trust. There are some dangerous players going forward, but they’re giving opponents far too much room and Ipswich took full advantage last weekend.

Elland Road is bouncing, Leeds are playing with confidence and there is no reason to get cute with this one. They’re the pick until somebody gives us a reason to stop backing them.

Manchester City vs Sunderland

Sunday, September 20 – Etihad Stadium

City passed a pretty ridiculous test at Old Trafford. They played most of the Manchester derby with ten men and still walked away with all three points. Four games, four wins. Not bad.

Sunderland were competitive against Arsenal and are still showing they belong at this level, but their opening run has now served up Arsenal followed immediately by City. Whoever designed that part of the fixture list clearly had a sense of humour.

City are stronger everywhere and the Etihad makes an already difficult job considerably worse. Sunderland can make them work, but anything other than a home win would be a massive surprise.

Fulham vs Manchester United

Sunday, September 20 – Craven Cottage

Fulham finally got something to show for their season by frustrating Liverpool at Anfield. The stalemate was easily their best performance so far and showed they’re capable of making good sides extremely uncomfortable.

United were competitive in the derby, but losing to a City side that played most of the match with ten men is difficult to dress up as anything other than a missed opportunity. They look considerably better going forward than they did in Week 1, but the results still aren’t coming consistently.

Craven Cottage is not an ideal place to go searching for an easy confidence boost. United have the stronger squad, but Fulham finally have something to build on. This feels close.
